Also known as The Great White Cherry, Prunus serrulata ‘Tai Haku’ is regarded as one of the most beautiful of the white flowering cherries. It forms a medium sized, vase-shaped tree, with a broad, spreading crown. Mid-green leaves, up to 20cm long, emerge reddish-bronze in the spring.
Pure white, saucer-shaped single flowers, 6cm across, appear with the leaves, contrasting beautifully against the foliage. Autumn brings another season of interest when the leaves turn yellow-orange before falling.
This ancient Japanese tree was thought to be extinct but was resurrected by the renowned cherry breeder Collingwood Ingram, who found a single, dying specimen in a garden in Sussex in 1923. All existing plants descend from that single tree.
‘Tai Haku’ is a vigorous cherry that makes a fine specimen tree for lawns and larger gardens. Award of Garden Merit. Maximum Height: 4-8m (13-26ft). Spread: 8m (26ft) upwards.
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
