This glamorous, architectural shrub creates a dramatic spring spectacle when it is smothered in bright yellow flowers and yet is surprisingly tough and undemanding. Paeonia lutea creates a strong architectural presence in the border with sturdy, upright branches clothed in deeply-divided, bright green foliage that forms a handsome backdrop to perennial plants. In May and June, it bears fragrant, bright yellow, 7cm saucer-shaped flowers with crepe-like petals and showy anthers. The blooms are much longer lasting than other tree peonies. The flowers are followed by large seedpods that split open to reveal black seeds. Paeonia lutea is an easy tree peony to grow. Plants are drought-tolerant once established and thrive in a wide range of well-drained soils including chalk. These reliable, long-lived shrubs last a life-time. Paeonia lutea makes an excellent feature plant for the back of a mixed border or planted at a woodland edge. Maximum height and spread: 2.5m (8.2ft).
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
