Native to Japan, this deciduous magnolia is the best choice for well-drained, neutral to high pH soils where most acid-loving magnolias aren’t suitable. Magnolia kobus is one of the few magnolias that grows well as a single-stemmed specimen, suiting large gardens where it develops into a medium-sized tree that begins with an upright, pyramidal form but slowly spreads with age. Although it is slow to achieve its full flowering potential, mature specimens are extremely floriferous. In March and April, it bears scented, pure white flowers with long, slender petals on bare branches. Leaves are oval and bright green. Additional interest is provided by yellow autumn foliage and distinctive dark red seed receptacles that split to reveal orange seeds within. Height and spread: 6-10m (20-32ft).
