A majestic and unmistakable evergreen magnolia, very different from the spring-flowering varieties. Magnolia grandiflora bears huge, leathery, dark glossy leaves with velvety, rusty-brown undersides. The foliage alone is a stunning feature of this impressive tree and gives year-round interest. This slow-growing Magnolia matures into a very large, rounded tree that can be grown as a free-standing specimen or trained against a warm, sunny wall where it will benefit from the residual heat. In late summer and autumn, it wows with huge, bowl-shaped flowers up to 25cm across. The thick, creamy petals open into opulent blooms with a fabulous perfume of honey and lemon, their sculpted form perfectly silhouetted against a background of dark green foliage. The distinctive seedheads that follow the flowers offer an additional season of interest. Unusually, this magnolia tolerates more alkaline, chalky soils than other varieties. Height: Over 12m (39ft). Spread: Over 8m (26ft).
