There is nothing to match the spring sensation of a magnolia in full bloom, but if you live in a northerly location or have a more exposed garden, you have probably admired them with envy whilst resisting planting one yourself. Flowering later than other varieties, Magnolia ‘Aphrodite’ is a great choice for those less-than-ideal conditions, as its late buds are less vulnerable to frost damage. Forming a small, vase-shaped tree that is perfect for small gardens, its bare branches are covered in plump buds that unfurl into deep pink goblets in late spring. Height: 4m (13ft). Spread: 3m (10ft).
