Best known around the world for being the main ingredient of beer and ale-making, hops can also be grown as ornamental decoration in gardens. The bright green leaves densely cover the twining stems as the scramble over walls and fences to provide excellent cover. The large green flowers – hops – form in mid to late summer and will then fade to a straw colour. Humulus lupulus are perennial climbers so can easily be cut back in autumn and will readily re-grow the following spring. The stems can also be cut to add to interest to indoor displays. Height: 6m (20’). Spread: 2m (6.5’).
Culinary Herb note: Some parts of these plants are edible and can be used as herbs to add flavour and colour to your meals. For more details about edible flowers click here.
