This variety of Japanese dogwood is vigorous and upright, producing masses of large white flower bracts, borne upon dark green foliage in summer, which turn shades of scarlet and dark red before falling in autumn. Cornus kousa ‘Schmetterling’ in an excellent choice of large shrub or small tree, due to its summer interest, although flower performance is dependent on the previous year’s weather conditions.
