Not widely known, Calycanthus x raulstonii ‘Hartlage Wine’ is a rare but delightful, multi-stemmed shrub with upright to arching branches, bearing lustrous green, oval leaves. The flowers are a rich shade of burgundy red, touched with a hint of cream in the centre, producing a light scent, flowering from late spring to early autumn. Height & Spread: 4m (13′).
Culinary note: Produces an edible and delicious spice. Snip off twigs and allow them to dry out in the sun or a low oven, then crush the bark and use like cinnamon. For more details about edible flowers click here.
