A stunning and unusual shrub, rarely seen in gardens, Calycanthus ‘Aphrodite’ well-deserves to be named after the Greek Goddess of Beauty!
Although it might be unremarkable when not in flower, forming a multi-stemmed shrub with aromatic bark and glossy green leaves – the extraordinary flowers are certainly worth waiting for. From late spring through summer, it bears large, fragrant, purplish-red flowers about 10cm diameter which are highly unusual in their form. They are composed of multiple elongated tepals and are somewhat similar to Magnolias. Their shape, deep red colour and sweet fruity scent are a unique combination that makes this a very special garden specimen. ‘Aphrodite’ is an improved form of the plain species, with exceptionally large and vivid flowers. Flowering is generous and there will be plenty to enjoy in indoor arrangements, where they will fill the room with scent. Their perfumed nectar is also attractive to butterflies.
As well as the flowers being fragrant, the oval leaves are aromatic when bruised, and offer an additional season of interest in the autumn when they turn yellow. Easy to grow in a sheltered location away from cold winds, Calycanthus ‘Aphrodite’ makes a unique specimen for a woodland style border or trained up against a wall or fence in urban gardens. Height and spread: 2m (6.5ft).
