Rarely found in gardens, Calycanthus chinensis deserves to be much more widely grown. This handsome deciduous shrub forms a bushy, medium sized plant cloaked in glossy, mid-green foliage that turns to buttery yellow in autumn. In early summer it bears white, camellia-like flowers up to 7cm (3″) diameter that nod demurely from the tip of each stem.
The aromatic foliage and sweet perfume of the flowers give this intriguing plant its common name of Chinese Sweetshrub. Calycanthus chinensis makes a magnificent stand-alone specimen shrub, or plant it at the back of a mixed border or woodland edge for an interesting talking point. Height: 3m (10’). Spread: 4m (13’).
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
