Amelanchier is one of the very best small trees for urban gardens or courtyards. A vigorous tree or large shrub, it is extremely hardy, easy to grow and tolerant of pollution. It delivers multiple seasons of interest and is especially suited to gardens with acid to neutral soil where it develops its best autumn foliage colour.
Amelanchier ‘Ballerina’ is one of the first trees to flower in March, when its broad, vase-shaped crown erupts into a mass of large, white, star-shaped flowers held in loose racemes that contrast beautifully with the emerging young bronze foliage. For maximum spring impact, it is stunning underplanted with early spring bulbs. The foliage matures to dark green in summer before turning brilliant red-purple in autumn followed by small red berries. The berries are very sweet and enjoyed by birds, who often snaffle them up before they have a chance to mature to deep purple. Height and spread: 4m (13ft).
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
